OV or EV: choosing your publisher identity

Understand validation levels, eligibility and the signing method you need.

Certificate selection

Start with applicant eligibility.

Code signing begins with a verified publisher identity. OV and EV differ primarily in verification requirements. The issuing authority determines which applicant types and countries qualify for each product.

Choose a compatible signing method.

Validation level alone does not determine how signing will fit into a release workflow. Compare supported cloud clients, physical tokens and HSM methods, then check authentication requirements.

Avoid assumptions about warnings.

A signed file allows publisher and integrity checks. It does not guarantee that Microsoft SmartScreen or other platforms will remove every warning. Reputation and other signals also matter.

Your selection checklist.

  • Applicant type, registered identity and country
  • Organization verification requirements
  • Compatible signing tools and protected key storage
  • Interactive or automated authorization needs
